Time to play catch-up! Spring has arrived in Dunedin which means pink and white blossoms all over campus, two guys with a frying pan selling breakfast to passersby on Castle Street, and mid-semester break. I was away for a week and then came back to three major reports due in less than two weeks, plus 500 pictures to sort through and blog about. I complained about my predicament to Maxine and she advised "Just....write." So here goes my attempt to catch everyone up on what has been going on, without this being a 3-day job. First I'll backtrack a bit.
Saturday, August 20th
Otago Farmers' Market day! All year long there is a big farmers' market down at the train station on Saturday mornings. It's pretty well known (well, ok, everything in tiny Dunedin is well known) and I've been hearing wonderful things about it for a long time. An empty stomach, walking shoes, and the first sunny morning in over a week made for a fantastic start. Oh, and a fellow farmers' market enthusiast: enter Miriam. She's an American as well...from Miami, going to school in Walla Walla, Washington. (That's fun to say outloud!) We started talking one day after a tutorial for Pacific Societies, and instantly hit it off. She's not much of a morning person, but she tolerated my giddy enthusiasm as we strolled the 20-minutes to the station, and got equally excited as we got close enough to take in the sight: endless quantities of fresh fruits, vegetables, herbs, meats, wines, honey, eggs, fruit preserves, breads, cakes, pastries and various ethnic foods, plus stands offering a feast of breakfast and dessert crepes, waffles, and coffee, a few street musicians, and brightly colored flowers of every kind. Dunedin knows how to do Saturday mornings! We got crepes (conveniently rolled into cones for eating while strolling), and they were just as awesome as the rumors had boasted. There were masses of people everywhere, probably drawn from their homes by the cheery welcome of the sunshine. It was a delightful morning, and we've made plans to go back soon--there are at least 5 more kinds of crepes we want to try!
